Still life painting of an atomiser, 2 vases and other antiques

Still life painting of an atomiser, 2 vases and other antiques

Here in South East England the weather has recently been wet and windy and occasionally quite cold.

I can work out of doors in the cold, and in the wet weather, as long as it’s not persistent.  What is difficult, is working in windy weather, and on such occasions, I prefer to work in my studio or a friends studio. We usually set up some still life objects and just wade in using oils on canvas board. Shiny objects, like silver or glass are good as they are sufficiently challenging. Mirrors and fabric can also be suitably challenging as they include reflections and textures.

Working from life, ie; real objects, requires all the same skills of observation and drawing as does working outside from nature. Unlike working from photographs, where tonal values are usually wrong, and the composition is fixed in advance by the photographer.

The careful placing of objects determines the composition and the choice of background colours and textures has to be decided as well.

Fabriano in Acquarello

Fabriano in Acquarello List of Artists from England

Just two weeks earlier, I’m taking myself off to Venice for a week of painting amongst the canals and historic buildings. Venice is a ‘Mecca’ for Artists because of it’s wonderful bright light, caused by the Island’s central position in the lagoon.

I’ll report back here with some photos to show you!
