It’s exhibition season! Almost before summer is out, it is time to begin to select my best works for the autumn exhibitions.
How do I decide which to choose?
We get together several times each year to present our best work in very different styles and mediums, paintings from realism to semi abstract and abstract expressionism, in watercolour, oils and acrylics, in addition to original prints, three dimensional sculptural works in ceramics and glass and even some items of decorated furniture. A true eclectic mix, not to be missed.
Then from 3rd September for a month, Steven Alexander and I are showing at Eclectic Art in Margate. An exciting ‘bijou’ gallery in the heart of the old town, details above.
This gallery and Westgate Galleria are both managed by the dream team of Sarah and Vivienne. Do pop in and see our best ‘Margate’ works in oils, pastels and watercolour.
Ok so how to choose what to show? It is not easy, I begin by looking through a large pile of recent works, there can be up to 150 to choose from. I am seeking out those which suit the chosen theme of the exhibition, then a second pass will choose those with the ‘strongest’ images, ie those with the greatest impact.
These are the ones that would draw the viewers eye to the far corner of the gallery. If at this stage, I have been too selective, then I look for any paintings which are almost there, but just need a little ‘tweak’ to strengthen them. Then the work of framing and mounting and varnishing begins, not forgetting choosing interesting titles, and labelling.
