Lockdown life – A portrait and some watercolours

Lockdown life - An interior, portrait and some watercolours

I have used the forced internment of lockdown  to get out of my comfort zone a little. It began with me painting some interiors and a portrait in oils, areas where I have rarely delved before. Being most enjoyable the challenges were fun and it kept me away from still life painting which is my least favourite genre.

Oil portrait during lockdown

This shows the view into the studio from the hall.
The portrait was worked up using photographs, which I never use in ordinary times.  I have been life drawing for many years without much success, so thought i’d try an interior portrait in oils. Anyway, here it is. I’ll leave you to be the judge of it’s success or otherwise.

Below are a couple of watercolours, which was my favourite medium for many years.

Here is a view of Stone Bay, which I painted on location just before this lockdown began. It is a local beach with areas of rocks scattered about, and popular with visitors.

This painting is of the jetty at Viking Bay, Broadstairs with its small fishing boats at anchor. A very popular spot, but I had to work fast before that dark cloud came over and drenched everything.

During this lockdown I enrolled on a six session online course, by an artist I have admired for many years, Grahame Booth. Well I couldn’t go out painting so it made sense.

What a great way to refresh my watercolour skills and learn some of Graham’s methods at the same time. I had attended one of his workshops before, so knew he was a good teacher.

Click the photo link to see Grahame’s work and course details. Below is one of my attempts from the course - Highly reccommended!

The strength in this watercolour is the way the sunlight has been captured, let Grahame show you how to do this.

I’ll leave you with a short video, enjoy and share if you wish!
