Bridges, Meadows and Bluebells, exciting choices!

Fordwich on Stour, painting

Bridges, meadows and bluebells are excellent subjects that give plenty of excitement to nature lovers and artists!

As an artist, I look for colourful subjects such as bluebells, or blossom, which appear only briefly, in springtime.  I also try to find a mixture of man made objects within a natural environment, and bridges fulfill this objective rather well.

Another reason for liking bridges is they bring people together. They also help to build trade and commerce.

They come in all shapes sizes and materials, here is a steel footbridge at the old hovercraft port at Pegwell Bay, now rusting and redundant.

And here I have painted the River Wantsum, passing through the meadows near Sarre in Kent. The bridge carries the road joining the Isle of Thanet to the UK mainland, replacing an earlier ferry, when the river was much wider.

Here is another bridge crossing the Stour river near Sandwich. The road bridge is reinforced concrete and the steel lattice girder section carries a waste water pipe over the river. This spot is popular with houseboat owners.  I have shown one here.

Here are some more meadows for you, looking the other way along the river Wantsum, towards a pump house, designed to adjust the water levels and protect the meadows from flooding. Below are more low lying meadows and on a walk in some woods nearby, I came upon these large puddles, which always make interesting subjects, with their reflections and the sunlight glancing through the trees.

Another bridge here is brick built, again crossing the river Stour,  at Shalmsford Street, where a mother and child are feeding the ducks.
I’ll leave you with a short demo with me painting another bridge in oils, this time in Venice, where I long to return one day. Enjoy, and do check out my other videos in You Tube.
